Early historians record that in 1623, within the power of an English land-grant, head John Mason, together with several others, delivered David Thomson, a Scotsman, and Edward and Thomas Hilton, fish-merchants of London, with a number of other folks in two sections to establish a fishing colony in what has grown to be New Hampshire, at lips regarding the Piscataqua River.
These sections, under Thomson, satisfied near the river’s throat at a spot they called bit Harbor or “Pannaway,” today town of Rye, in which they erected salt-drying fish shelves and a “factory” or material residence. Additional unit within the Hilton brothers developed their own fishing phase on a neck of land eight kilometers above, that they called Northam, a short while later known as Dover. […]
